GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 27th July.
The annual RSGB national mobile rally takes place next Sunday
3rd August, at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire.
The rally will open at 10am and will feature a large trade
exhibition, RSGB bookstall and membership services stand, and a
members' mart. Tables in the members' mart will be available hourly
on a first-come first-served basis. No tables will be available
before 10am.
The rally takes place next to the coach park and entrance is
free. However there is a charge (1 pound 50 per car) for entrance to
the grounds of Woburn park - which has many attractions for the
whole family. The rally will be well signposted and talk-in will be
provided on 2 metres and 70 centimetres by the Dunstable Downs radio
club.
The Rolls-Royce amateur radio club's mobile rally also takes
place on 3rd August. It will be held at the Rolls-Royce sports and
social club in Barnoldswick, and will open at 11am.
The rally will feature all the usual attractions including a
bring and buy stall and instant raffle. Refreshments are provided
and admission is free. There is ample car parking. Talk-in will be
provided on S22 by G3RR.

LATEST ON CEPT LICENCE
----------------------
Five member countries of CEPT - Norway, Austria, Liechtenstein,
Switzerland, West Germany - have already agreed conditions for
operation by visiting amateurs without the need to apply formally
for a reciprocal licence. This means that visiting amateurs from
other CEPT countries can operate in any of the five countries named
above provided they hold suitable documentation.
RSGB has asked the DTI to look into forms of suitable
documentation as a high priority. The subject is currently being
considered. More news as we have it...
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
There was a continuing sunspot count during the period from
14th July to 20th July, reaching 37 on the 17th. This resulted in a
slight increase in solar flux levels for the second week running,
averaging 73 units. The geomagnetic A index was quiet every day
except the 17th, which reached 12 units. The average was 7 units.
The lowest figure was 4 units, on the 20th.
The particle input from the solar wind was negligible, and the
INDA index for the period 7th to 13th July was very quiet.
At present there are four active regions on the sun, although
the one at heliographic longitude 225 degrees is the only really
active one. This is currently producing minor X-ray, visible, and
radio type 10 flares of up to 230 solar flux units. The centre of
this region will be in view again this week.
50MHz openings to the United States occurred on 9th July. N4VA
in North Carolina worked EI6AS in Eire and many stations in the U.K.
The opening took place between 2230 and 2320 hours.
In another opening, on the 12th, at least three American
stations worked several stations in the U.K.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
No data is available from Appleton this week due to equipment
failure. However, it appears that ionospheric conditions have hardly
changed since last week.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
Once again, most of the data from South Uist has been lost due
to equipment failure. A new ionosonde is currently being installed;
while this is being done failures in the old equipment are slow to
be repaired.
The period 15th - 17th July saw almost no change; the daily
highs were around 5.5MHz and the darkness hour lows were around
2.8MHz.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
Solar activity is very low and is expected to stay low, but two
active regions will rotate onto the sun's visible disc as the week
proceeds. This will probably maintain the sunspot count and keep up
the present levels of solar flux. Both regions gave minor X-ray and
optical flares on their previous rotation. The geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet or just unsettled all the week.
The recent minor levels of solar activity has lifted
ionospheric F2 critical frequency levels about 0.5MHz, and this
improvement is expected to be maintained. Daytime levels in the
south are expected to be around 6MHz with corresponding levels in
the north around 5.4MHz. Darkness hour levels are not expected to
change much.
SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS
----------------------
Special event stations this week include:-
GB8CG - from 24th July to 4th August to commemorate the 1986
Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. The station will be run by the
Lothians RS and will be active each day on HF and VHF. Talk-in for
visiting amateurs can be arranged after initial contact on S20 or
the local repeater.
GB4CGW - for the Commonwealth Games Water Sports, near
Motherwell. The station is active until 2nd August, and is being run
by the mid-Lanark ARS. Operation is on all bands from 80 to 2
metres. A special certificate is available for working both
Commonwealth Games stations; the fee is 1 IRC. QSL via the bureau,
or via PO box 20, Motherwell, Scotland.
GB4OAS - on 2nd August at the Oswestry Agricultural Show, Park
Hall, Oswestry. Operation will be on HF and VHF, and VHF contacts
will count towards the Border award.
DXPEDITION NEWS
---------------
The GM4CAN Portable ARG will be active from the island of South
Harris from 3rd - 15th August. The locator is IO67MS, WAB square
NG08. Operation will take place on the following frequencies plus or
minus QRM:-
144.240MHz SSB, 144.040MHz CW, 144.140MHz CW MS, under the callsign
GM4AFF/P.
432.240MHz SSB and 432.040MHz CW, under the callsign GM4RQI/P
GM4CAN/P will be used on 14.345MHz during the VHF net at 0530Z
each day, on 3760kHz for WAB contacts in the late afternoon, on
3645kHz for the daily VHF net at 2230Z, and on 1930kHz for WAB
contacts as requested.
It is anticipated that some rare WAB squares will be activated
during the first week on both 80 and 160 metres. All skeds for
moonbounce and meteor scatter should be arranged through the VHF
nets each day. Other skeds can be arranged by telephoning Stewart
G4AFF before 1st August on 0305 775456.
The Sir Walter Raleigh, carrying GB0SWR/MM is set to leave
Tutuila in the south Pacific tomorrow (28th July). The Sir Walter
Raleigh will arrive at the Savai and Upolu islands later in the day
and the amateur radio operators will begin a period of operation
using a 5W1 - Western Samoa - callsign prefix. This will continue
until 8th August, when the ship will set sail for Tonga. The Tongan
A3 prefix will be active for an 8 day period.
GB0SWR/MM will operate SSB only when travelling between
islands, and will be looking for UK contacts from 0600GMT each day
in 14.260MHz.
Ross Forbes WB6GFJ is also in the south Pacific at the moment
and will be winding up a period of operation from the island of
Takaroa on 31st July. His next move will be to the South Cook
islands, where he will reactivate the callsign ZK1XE for about 4
days. After ZK1, Ross will move on to ZL, VK, 3D2, and KH6 before
returning to California at the beginning of September.
Since it came on-line officially last October the RSGB's
DataBox information service has proved to be a success. The
information should become available on the national Prestel service
later this week - thanks to Micronet Clubspot 810. This means that
many more members will be able to access the service for the price
of a local or short distance call.
Following close behind is a new telephone bulletin board called
ARCNET which is operational 24 hours a day and is dedicated to
amateur radio clubs. AMRAC, the Amateur Radio and Computing Club has
its own section and it's hoped that other groups will register.
There is no fee - all it costs is a 'phone call to 0376 518818. The
system operates on 300 baud. Further details from George Lloyd G1NNB
on 0376 511471.
The Post Office has informed RSGB that the latest callsigns
issued as of Wednesday 16th July were in the G0FH and G1UJ series.
The results of the May RAE have now been released, and despite the
large number of licence applications the radio amateur licensing
unit in Chesterfield is maintaining its 7 to 10 day turnround.
